Historic Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Get in touch with America's history with a trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Dating back to just a few short days after the last bullet was fired outside this small Pennsylvania town, Americans traveled to Gettysburg to learn more about the tragic Civil War battle engaged on the fields surrounding town and to pay respects to the brave men who sacrificed their lives for what they believed.

Since then, millions have stepped foot on those battlefields. These days, more than 1,400 monuments and markers take the place of those fallen soldiers as a reminder to the nation of its most trying time in history.

No matter how much time goes by, America will never forget what happened in Gettysburg. Under any other circumstance, this would be a different country today had it not been for the heroic efforts on this land.

But Gettysburg is much more than the site of such gruesome tragedy. It is a place of renewed hope, of which President Abraham Lincoln so eloquently spoke. This is the place where our 16th president reminded us of the hard work of our forefathers and challenged Americans to live that dream.

In Gettysburg, we invite you to walk in the footsteps of history. Whether you stand atop Little Round Top and take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made in the valley below or walk among the unmarked gravesites in the Soldiers' National Cemetery, Gettysburg is a place that brings history books alive and turns family vacations into lifelong passions.

In 2009, Gettysburg is taking center stage as the nation celebrates the Lincoln Bicentennial - a tribute to one our country's most beloved presidents. Join us as we remember the works of Lincoln and what he strove to do here that cold November day in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

On Nov. 19, we will mark the 146th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address with honored guests, a wreath-laying ceremony at the Soldiers' National Cemetery, a naturalization ceremony and recital of the Gettysburg Address. Two days later - on Nov. 21 - we remember the significance of Gettysburg through a parade with thousands of living historians and an Illuminary at the National Cemetery.

The fall season is also a great time to visit Gettysburg and its surrounding countryside. For the history buffs, the battlefield is transformed into a majestic scene of beauty and reverence. It's a quiet time to learn, to reflect and pay tribute.

Autumn is also harvest time in this Pennsylvania fruit belt. As one of the largest growers of apples in the United States, Adams County, Pa., has become an icon of the fruit industry. Throughout the fall, locals and visitors alike celebrate that harvest through time-honored events and farm markets lining the scenic country roads tucked in the thousands of acres of orchards.
