Fun and adventure go hand-in-hand in North Dakota. And, like our landscape, activities range from serene to extreme. Whether it's hands-on learning, cowboy living, or following the trails of legends, North Dakota has an array of adventure in store for families.
The Children's Museum at Yunker Farm — The bright red barn is just one of the attractions at this learning museum for children in Fargo. More than 50 hands-on exhibits engage, educate, and stimulate creativity and interaction. From the puppet theater to the planetarium to the bee hive, children can explore their universe. Yunker Farm is rated as one of the top 25 children's museums in the United States by Child magazine. www.childrensmuseum-yunker.org or (701) 232-6102
Follow the trail of legends — Explorers Lewis & Clark and their Corps of Discovery traveled along the Missouri River more than 200 years ago. Families today can traverse the land that the intrepid explorers encountered in North Dakota. Camp at one of the beautiful state parks adorning the river or magnificent Lake Sakakawea — named for the famous young Hidatsa woman who helped guide Lewis & Clark on their journey west.
Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site at Stanton has a visitor center, exhibits and reconstructed—and furnished—earth lodges. Nearby Washburn boasts the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. Just down the road is Fort Mandan, Lewis & Clark's reconstructed winter headquarters where you'll find a children's discovery center at the visitor center. Barely an hour's drive south is Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, which includes On-A-Slant Indian Village. Finally, check out the Dakota Zoo in Bismarck to see some of the animals that Lewis & Clark documented on their journey.
Western adventure — The wild terrain of the North Dakota Badlands provides a spectacular backdrop for frontier experiences steeped in history. Walkable towns boasting shops, cafes and museums are peppered with unique dining opportunities from pitchfork fondues to cowboy-themed steakhouses.
Get off the fence and into the action at one of North Dakota's working ranches. Guests can work the range and take part in roundups, or enjoy the scenery at a lodge overlooking the Badlands. To complete the western experience, see firsthand how cowboys and cowgirls work up their appetites by attending one of North Dakota's legendary rodeos where they rope, ride, wrestle and race against the best in the west.
