Orlando—now for wizards too
Posted by meredith to Travel Meredith on
8 February 2010, with no comments so far.
As if it wasn’t already the most magical destination for families in the U.S., Orlando is about to add a whole other dimension, one that no muggle could have every dreamed of accessing before.
Welcome Wizarding World, set to open at Universal Orlando any fabulous moment.
I’ve never seen so much press for a theme park attraction. But then again, there’s never been anything like the phenomenon that is Harry Potter. My kids swooned to the floor when they saw the television commercial during the Super Bowl last night. (Ummm. So did their dad.)
And really, what’s stopping any of us from getting to Orlando as fast as our brooms can take us? Look at what else you’ll find there: Disney World’s multiple theme parks, SeaWorld Orlando, Discovery Cove, the Kennedy Space Center…
I could go on, but I’m starting to swoon myself.
(Just do yourself a favor and stay at one of the on-site hotels at Universal Orlando if you plan to Potter it. The whole muggle world is really gonna line up for this one, and on-site stays will get you past all that.)

Baseball vacations through MLB? Batter up!
Posted by meredith to Travel Meredith on
28 January 2010, with no comments so far.
The boys of summer are about to warm up right with spring training, and I’m warming up my laptop exploring the Spring Training Vacations offered through Major League Baseball.
Yup, aside from providing you with the endless joy of America’s Pastime, MLB does vacation packages, too.
And I’m SOLD. Packages vary in length of stay, options, and cost. But they can include flights, hotel accommodations you specify, rental cars with unlimited mileage, merchandise, unlimited ballpark food and drink, and (ohmygoshohmygosh) exclusive team events with coaches and players.
Not all teams are participating—only 12 Cactus League (Arizona) and 9 Grapefruit League (Florida) teams are offering spring vacation packages this year. (Oh, where for art thou, Minnesota Twins?!)
But for those of you whose bases are currently covered with dirty snow, who dream of sunny days with a hot dog, a beer, and a batter up, this is your fabulous baseball/spring break getaway.
Says one family, “It’s a much more personal atmosphere; from the players, to the staff, to the ballpark.”
Swoon……

The last of the holiday beach deals (or: Go USA!)
Posted by meredith to Travel Meredith on
4 November 2009, with no comments so far.
We’re past that point on the calendar when you can get passports for yourself and your kids in time for a tropical holiday beach vacation, at least without biting your nails at the mailbox.
Guess that leaves us with the good ol’ U.S. of A.
Luckily, we’ve got some great beaches here in the U.S. Unfortunately, us yanks ain’t known for the “whole package,” like you find in the Caribbean. The kind of vacation where you lie in a hammock, hold out your hand, and a piña colada magically drops into it is scarce here in the states.
But I know of at least three good secrets:
Florida: Just north of Jacksonville, Amelia Island Plantation offers all-inclusive packages, including green fees and carts, meals in nine restaurants, and—I am not kidding here—video game console rentals. Calling all families with teens….
Hawaii: One of the few all-inclusives on the islands (Hawaii isn’t known for this option, though I’m lobbying for change!), the Kona Village Resorts on the fabulous Big Island offer a “Togethering” package: one bungalow at the regular rate, and the second one at half off, plus meals half off, plus, well, everything half off. This is great for large, extended families who love each other very much but are not actually interested in staying in the same room together.
California: It’s technically not all-inclusive, but Paradise Point Resort and Spa in San Diego offers something worth mentioning: complimentary breakfast every morning, plus SeaWorld (which, by the way, is within walking distance of the resort).
That’s about as American “beachy” as you get. Seriously.

You can still bet on Vegas for families
Posted by meredith to Travel Meredith on
18 October 2009, with no comments so far.
It’s not part of the still-used “What Happens Here…” ad campaign, but Las Vegas is still a great vacation for families, especially families with kids of varying ages (7 to 17), families looking for deals, and families who know what they’re doing. Why?
Vegas hotels are cheap. Did I say cheap? I mean dirt cheap. Strip lodging gets as low as $22 a night at Hotels.com. Mid-week rates for the über-friendly Circus Circus are $28 for late fall at Travelocity right now. (At those rates, the kids can have their own room!) Plus, Strip hotels are filled with totally free entertainment you can all gawk at all day: shark aquariums, gargantuan fountains, spooky pyramids, real (looking) pirates, and very real wild animals. And that’s just to name a few.
Vegas eats are cheap and convenient. Vegas rivals cruise ships for the best in buffet dining. For families with different tastes, buffets mean everyone is happy, at least at mealtime. Family-friendly Treasure Island (pirates!) and Planet Hollywood (stars!) have great buffets for kids and grownups. Buffet prices ($9 – $27) are best at breakfast and lunch, when kids eat the most anyway. The Rainforest Cafe in the MGM Grand has cheap breakfast in a reasonable fascimile of a rainforest, and Maggiano’s Little Italy serves economical family style, where you’re allowed to load up on pasta and bread.
The shows. Some of the family shows speak for themselves—certainly you’re aware of The Lion King, Blue Man Group, and the various Cirque Du Soleil shows. But there’s also the circus acts at Circus Circus, dining and jousting at Tournament of Kings at Excalibur (knights!), ICE on ice at the Riviera, and Mamma Mia! at Mandalay Bay. Not to mention several of the world’s best magicians (family-friendly and not-so, but it’s pretty easy to tell). And then there’s the tours, which include Leann Rimes, Tim McGraw, Kelly Clarkson, the Smothers Brothers, the Latin Grammy Awards, So You Think You Can Dance, and the Professional Bull Riders Finals, all in the next 30 days. (FYI: Visit Las Vegas is keeping pretty good tabs at all times.)
In other words, I think you’ll all be able to find something to do that’s perfectly respectable—and super fun.

All-inclusive holiday beaching in St. Thomas via this deal from Expedia: 50 percent off the Marriott Frenchman. A sample 4-night stay, with flight from NYC, comes up at only $530 per person.
I hear the lobster buffet is divine and the beachfront rooms offer a stunning location—water’s edge in 100 steps or less.
For travel before January 8.

Discounted Disney rooms
Posted by meredith to Travel Meredith on
9 September 2009, with no comments so far.
This doesn’t happen often: Disney-sponsored discounts of nearly 30 percent on select Disney Resorts.
The week right before Christmas is particularly attractive: That week you’ll save $41 a night on a value resort room, $146 a night on a deluxe resort room, and $166 a night on a deluxe villa. Just book by September 26.
And really consider it. Rarely does Disney resort lodging get this low, and the advantages to doing Disney from a Disney resort are worth it. (Mostly for the extended park hours and free transportation to the parks.)

All free for kids! (And lots free for you, too, with the all-inclusive option.)

(Safely and comfortably) visiting your national parks
Posted by meredith to Travel Meredith on
30 August 2009, with no comments so far.
Did you know you own 80 million acres? It’s called the National Park System and it’s yours, generous taxpayer.
The Children and Nature and No Child Left Inside movements, paired with our growing national conscience surrounding All Things Green, and yeah, that icky recession, have given the “nature vacation” a whole new cache. In a few weeks, PBS will debut a Ken Burns film on our National Parks, and the interest will grow even larger. Larger than the public interest in the Family Obama trip to the Grand Canyon? Quite possibly, yes.
Of course hoofing it around a canyon rim is a tad bit different than cruising a luxury liner or beaching it all-inclusive-resort style. But a national park vacation doesn’t have to mean backwoods camping with only a pocket knife and a Cliff bar to keep you warm, either. How can your family get the most out of our national parks without requiring a helicopter rescue, and instead requiring a soft, clean pillow in a comfortable hotel?
• Consider a guide service—park-sponsored or independent—to help you really experience a park. This way, you won’t doom your family to eating moss until you are rescued by the National Guard because you made a wrong turn in the woods. Many national parks partner with guides and outfitters, so check the NPS website to see what the park you’re considering has. Or consider a well-supervised volunteer vacation through NPS-sponsored Volunteers-in-Parks Program, or another eco-tourism-friendly organization like the American Hiking Society or the Sierra Club.
• Have your kids join the Junior Rangers Program and visit parks that participate. The program has been revamped to include more ecology lessons and physical activity for kids, including picking up garbage on on park bike trails, learning Native American dance, and taking soil samples. And you and I both know the kids are more likely to enjoy it if someone other than their parents tells them to do it.
• Stay at a public lodge on national park grounds. (this PBS series does a great job presenting them, as does the companion book). Some of the most beautiful—and comfortable, really!—lodging in the U.S. showcases some of our most beautiful national parks. You really don’t have to shower in a cement shed filled with spiders.
• Visit a park with a focus on people and history. Did you know there’s a national park dedicated to New Orleans jazz? Women’s Rights? The Industrial Revolution? There is. And they are all fascinating. (And if you’re afraid of bugs and raccoons, they are all comfortably located in urban areas.)
Pete Seeger wasn’t joking when he said this land was made for you and me (from the redwood forest to the gulf stream waters, even). You’ll be that more proud of this land when you’re family gets out there and really sees it.
