Best post-holiday spa deals

Seventeen texts and two cramped thumbs later, my sister and I have finally decided on mom’s holiday gift: an after-the-holidays spa weekend.

Mom is ecstatic. Apparently this is way better than the year we bought her pots and pans.

We aren’t the only brilliant family out there. Travel + Leisure ranked the 10 Coziest U.S. Spas for escaping the worst of winter this time two years ago, and CNN had the scoop last year on five of the best spas for holiday detox. This year, I’ve got to note the deals, which are unbelievable on spa packages for “the ladies” (as Dad would say).

My picks for this year’s post-holiday getaway:

Cloister at Sea Island, Simons Island, Georgia

The Spa Essentials Package adds a massage and facial to a seaside cottage on five miles of private beach for $375 per person. (And if that website image of the horseback ride on the beach doesn’t sell you, nothing will.)

Willow Stream, The Spa at Fairmont, Scottsdale, Arizona
This Original Winter deal is simply incredible: lodging rates discounted to $199 per person per night until April 15—that’s 50 percent off the usual!

Sundara Inn and Spa, Wisconsin Dells
The Girlfriends Spa Therapy Special includes massage, pedicure, dinner, buffet, and accommodations in a private villa for $199 per person. (Plus, you’ll be deep in Dells territory, so if mommy wants to go to a giant water park afterward…)

Silverado Resort, Napa, California
Spa Girl Package includes a fireplace suite, 50-minute spa treatment, breakfast, and a complimentary wine tasting for $250 per person. Did I just say complimentary wine tasting? Yes, I did.

San Fran holiday family survival package

Dear San Francisco-based Personality Hotels chain,

I love you for thinking of this: The Holiday Family Survival Package includes accommodations in one of six Personality hotels, complimentary parking and gas card, Union Square shopping discounts, a calendar with local kid-friendly holiday events and sights, two bags of candy, and a bottle of champagne for grownups.

I’d choose the Hotel Union Square. It was built in 1913 (history) and has a special kid’s suite with toys and computers (smarts). See if you can request it….

Best winter beaching flight deals (so far)

This from Expedia and Air Tran:

One-way fares to Aruba, Nassau, Cancun, Key West, or Puerto Rico from $49 per person.

Midwesterners looking to warm up this holiday season: Cancun is the most reasonable, with one-way flights for $94 or less.

Book by November 10 for travel by February 10.

All-inclusive holiday beaching: Wyndham Nassau

Half off the all-inclusive Bahamanian resort Wyndham Nassau at CheapCaribbean.com. This one’s good for kids (water park), couples (spa and sunsets), and singles (nightlife and casino).

Priced from $589 per person (with flight) for four nights, file this under “great deal on holiday beaching.”

Book by November 2 for travel from January 1 to February 3.

Holiday beaching: Occidental Grand Xcaret

If you haven’t visited the Xcaret Eco-park on the Mayan Riviera, now’s the time. It’s stunning, magical, and right now it’s highly discounted.

Apple Vacations is offering up to 50 percent off during December and the holidays for stays at the Occidental Grand Xcaret, the official all-inclusive resort adjacent to the Xcaret park.

You can’t beat this one for eco-minded families with a wide ranges of ages to please. And you can’t beat seven nights all-inclusive + flight from $700 per person.

My pick for Columbus Day deals:

Priceline, which is offering 50 percent off hotel and flight + hotel package deals for October 10 through 12.

More holiday beaching: St. Thomas

All-inclusive holiday beaching in St. Thomas via this deal from Expedia: 50 percent off the Marriott Frenchman. A sample 4-night stay, with flight from NYC, comes up at only $530 per person.

I hear the lobster buffet is divine and the beachfront rooms offer a stunning location—water’s edge in 100 steps or less.

For travel before January 8.

Leaf-looking by boat + Salem on Halloween

Love this to see New England in autumn: 7-day cruise on Cunard’s Queen Mary, departing October 29 from New York City.

All that leaf-looking, no traffic, and on a luxury liner. The price ($935 per person) is deeply discounted, and there’s also a $300 onboard credit offered.

Even better: You’ll get the opportunity to visit Salem, Massachusetts on Halloween.

Shivers. I have shivers!

Another holiday beach deal: All-inclusive Cancun

Kids stay and eat free at very kid-friendly Crown Paradise Club in Cancun, now and through the holidays.

The kids really love this one: Huge waterpark, family suites, and even a place for babies called “Baby Paradise.”

All free for kids! (And lots free for you, too, with the all-inclusive option.)

Christmas break wolf-tracking with Grandma

Here’s a winter-break trip to howl about: Your kids (ages 8 – 12) and their grandparents dog-sledding, ice-fishing, and wolf-tracking deep in the Minnesota woods from just after Christmas until New Year’s Day, while you and your spouse lie around the house in your jammies and play all the new video games (or take your own adults-only vacay).

That’s why I love this particular Elderhostel intergenerational trip. $499 per person for five nights (beginning December 27) leaves you and your honey free to get wild on New Year’s, while the kids and their grandparents get wild too—in a totally different, completely educational way.

Open until filled.
