Monumental Black Hills and Badlands
Discover monumental places in the Black Hills and Badlands, an oasis of pine-clad mountains on the Great Plains; home of Mount Rushmore, the Badlands and four other national parks, nine state parks and hundreds of attractions.

The Black Hills and Badlands of western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming are an oasis of sky-piercing granite peaks and ancient forested mountains that rise up from the surrounding prairie. Found in this oasis is an abundance of natural beauty, wholesome family attractions, world-class wildlife access, lively festivals and a place in America's western lore. All are a part of what is touted as "the Great American Road Trip," that can only be found in the Black Hills and Badlands.

A compact region, it's home to America's "Shrine of Democracy," Mount Rushmore National Memorial and just down the road, a second-mountain carving currently in progress, Crazy Horse Memorial, that when finished will be the world's largest. The Black Hills are also home of the nation's first national monument in Devils Tower, along with other-worldly Badlands National Park and eleven other national/state park and rec areas.   The beauty and natural bounty of this place serves as a canvas for more than sculptors and the patient hand of nature though.

Boundless opportunities for those looking to discover a whole new experience are everywhere. Over a million acres of Black Hills National Forest provide hiking, biking, backpacking, rock climbing, cliff jumping, kayaking, hunting and fishing. One can camp among the pines, explore some of the world's greatest caverns or play in a clear mountain lake. In the winter, there's ice fishing, snowmobiling, snow shoeing and skiing.   Its not just out in sanctity of the Black Hills forest that visitors to the area will discover authentic experiences.

Every Black Hills town offers memorable events, shopping, amazing restaurants, craft breweries and wineries. In fact, many of these events and festivals have started to garner equal attention as the region's famous landmarks.  In July, tens of thousands come celebrate the Fourth of July in patriotic places like Mount Rushmore or the City of Presidents in Rapid City. Every August, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally brings in hundreds of thousands; every fall, tens of thousands experience the sight and sounds of 1,300 buffalo thundering across the landscape at the Annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup.

With such infinite variety, the Black Hills and Badlands hold experiences and adventures that will truly resonate with everyone, no matter the time of year or interests.
