The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel

Our greatest treasures aren't a secret. In fact, we share them with everyone.

We have a lot of sayings on The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel, which we call "Islandology."Some say it's a mindset. But no matter what you call it, it's our way of life. The best souvenirs are priceless and also free.

Take shelling for example. It's among our most treasured pastimes, and we even established National Seashell Day to celebrate. Always occurring on the first day of summer, this year's "shellebration" falls on June 21, 2018. The area's unique geography allows thousands of seashells – more than 400 kinds in all shapes and sizes – to roll onto our beaches every day. This extraordinary variety draws treasure seekers of all ages and expertise. Free for the taking and free to hold on to for a moment or a lifetime. This search for shells can take you from island to island, where each secluded stretch of sand holds something special.

When you're away from it all, you can get back to what matters most. Maybe it's your family, your friends, your significant other or your love of nature. In fact, many visitors make regular returns just to see our incredible wildlife. Colorful migratory birds – more than 270 different kinds – flying overhead and friendly dolphins playing in your boat wake are an irresistible combination for nature enthusiasts and photographers.

Take it all in while island hopping, walking on the wetland boardwalk at Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve or gliding in a kayak among miles of tangled mangroves of the Great Calusa Blueway.Sunshine nourishes even the brightest minds. The tranquility and beauty of this place inspired iconic inventors Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. This is where their imaginations ran wild, filling their laboratories with world-changing ideas. You can still see their work on display at the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. You might just find a little inspiration yourself.
