African American heritage is rich in the state of South Carolina and people of all backgrounds travel to this region to learn about the history and culture that affected not only a state, but a nation.
Visit the region where enslaved Africans first touched American soil and the coastal region where the Gullah language and culture still flourish. Tour historic Charleston and trace African-American life from the arrival of slaves in the 1670s to the modern Civil Rights Movement. All across South Carolina, you’ll find historic sites, plantations, churches, museums, art centers, monuments and festivals dedicated to honoring the art, music, spirit and accomplishments of African Americans.
