Parks and Buildings

Confederate Park
An obelisk in this park honors "faithful slaves" who remained loyal to their owners during the Civil War. It is said to be the only monument of its kind in the South.

Dizzy Gillespie Birthplace Park
This park marks the site of jazz great Dizzy Gillespie's birthplace in Cheraw. The park includes a historical marker on his life and features sculpture and park benches that symbolize his achievements. The park is open from dawn to dusk. There is also a statue of Gillespie on the Cheraw Town Green on Market Street. A guide to the sites connected to his life is available at the Cheraw Chamber of Commerce.

Faith Cabin Library
Built in the 1930s, this is one of the few remaining examples of the African-American libraries built throughout the South by the Rosenwald Foundation.

Central Baptist Church
Thought to be one of the first churches founded and built solely by African Americans in Charleston, Central was designed by black architect John P. Hutchinson and completed in 1893. The church is an excellent example of a vernacular Carpenter Gothic style, with a detailed protective hood above the central double doors and Gothic windows with plate tracery.
