Art, History and Culture
From a bluff overlooking the Tennessee River to a mountain "above the clouds", Chattanooga has a rich artistic and historic background that attracts visitors as well as residents.
The Hunter Museum of American Art, which has one of the largest collections of American art, is located in the Bluff View Art District, a distinctive little area with shops, restaurants and B&Bs. Perched on an 80-foot bluff, the view from the Hunter is one of the best in town.
Lookout Mountain was the site of the "Battle Above the Clouds", a Civil War battle that took place in the dense autumn fog in November of 1863. Point Park atop Lookout Mountain was built in 1905 to commemorate this battle and contains monuments and memorabilia from the Civil War. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in nearby Chickamauga, GA preserves the memory of the Battle for Chattanooga.
The beautifully restored Tivoli Theatre is the home of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera and hosts numerous concerts throughout the year. The annual Riverbend Festival, held every June on the riverfront, is a nine-day music festival with food and fun for everyone. Across the river in the trendy Northshore area is the Chattanooga Theatre Center which hosts productions almost every weekend.
The Friday night concert series, NightFall, is the place to hear rock or zydeco, and everything in between. Arts festivals, such as the annual 4 Bridges Art Festival hosted by Allied Arts, Chattanooga's local arts organization, complement the local arts scene.
