Cruise to Lose (Weight, that Is)
Cruise ships, with their 24-hour buffets, are not normally seen as a healthy retreat. However, a number of ships are trying to change that perception. They’re offering healthy food options, a plethora of active excursions and gyms that would put your land-based gym to shame. Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas (Phone: 866-562-7625; www.freedomoftheseas.com/) is one such ship. With an outdoor climbing wall with 11 routes, a boxing ring, state-of-the art gym and an ice rink, Freedom is hoping to become the cruise of choice for health aficionados.
Meanwhile, Celebrity Cruise’s Millennium (www.celebrity.com; Phone: 800-647-2251) offers active excursions (hiking in Chile, horseback riding in Argentina); an AquaSpa cafe (low-fat, healthy food options) and an array of gym classes and personal training options aboard the ship.
Whether you’re visiting a spa, yoga center, cruise or another healthy retreat, it’s important to look closely at the itinerary and ask yourself these questions:
1. Are their healthy food options available?
2. Is there an array of active excursions offered each day?
3. Is there a personal trainer on premises (important if you’re new to an activity or want to expand your fitness options)?
4. Are their classes for mental health (meditation, yoga, and stress-relief)?
5. Is the price inclusive of all activities?
With so many options out there, it’s easy to stay on your wellness plan—healthy eating and active workouts—while still having a fun vacation.
