For more than 25 years, the seaside city of Kennebunkport, Maine kicks off the holiday season with the Christmas Prelude, a ten day festival of shopping and special events. In true Maine fashion, Santa arrives by lobster boat and travels by river to the downtown area escorted by a pair of “lobster elves.” There is a tree-lighting ceremony at Dock Square. There will also be Christmas carolers outdoors at St Anthony’s Franciscan Monastery, just across the street from the White Barn Inn. This event draws thousands who raise their voices and enjoy wood-fire roasted chestnuts provided by the Inn. Horse-drawn sleigh rides can be arranged, with refreshments of hot-mulled cider, dozens of arts and crafts fairs, dining venues serving holiday specialties and music programs help celebrate the season.
