Martha's Vineyard: Great Family Fun

By Judy Koutsky

For those looking for a long relaxing weekend, it’s hard to beat Martha’s Vineyard. There are amazing beaches, biking trails galore, a public bus system that can cart families from one end of the island to the other and beautiful lighthouse well worth exploring.

Where to Stay:
Harbor View Hotel & Resort (www.harbor-view.com; 800-225-6005) is the ideal place for both families and couples on a babymoon. It’s a perfect last trip before junior makes his appearance. The resort is situated in Edgartown, a picturesque and bustling small town on the island, which offers plenty of restaurants, ice cream shops, fudge and candy stores. Tour operators offer kayak, biking and island excursions.

The resort originally opened in 1891 and is undergoing a multi-phase $100 million restoration project. The nice part about the renovations is that they are taking place in the off season, so as not to disrupt the hotel guests during their stay. Arguably one of the nicest resorts on the island, what makes this property so special is that it’s classy enough for discerning couples looking for a romantic retreat and yet it also appeals to families looking for an upscale experience.

The property is the largest hotel on the island with 114 guestrooms, including 18 recently remodeled suites making it an ideal setting for large families traveling together or family reunions. We highly recommend booking one of the suites which allows ample room for families to spread out. The one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites range from 900 to 1,200 square feet, each offering its own private porch.

One of the highlights of the resort is the expansive wraparound community porch found in the main building. It offers sweeping views of Edgartown Harbor, the lighthouse and the many sailboats, yachts and boats that dock along the shore. Sitting on one of the porch’s many rocking chairs or comfortable sofas, couples can enjoy an evening cocktail and families can enjoy ice cream while taking in the views.

Vineyard Cuisine
Guests at Harbor View Hotel & Resort will enjoy dining at the newly renovated Water Street restaurant. Breakfasts include a scrumptious buffet complete with eggs, pancakes, French toast, bacon, ham, sausage, smoke salmon, fresh fruit, muffins, croissants, bagels, breads and granola. Dinners are beautifully presented and prepared; cuisine includes salmon, bass, tuna, beef fillet and homemade gourmet desserts. Not only is the food a real treat, but diners are treated to beautiful harbor views.
