New England: Perfect for Romance

By Judy Koutsky

New England is a perfect place for romantic getaways as it offers everything from fantastic ski resorts to little towns seemingly created for antiquing. Many B&Bs and resorts in this region boast in-room fireplaces, so couples can cozy up over a hot cup of cider before venturing out into the crisp air. New England is a mosaic of contrasts that all fit together for a great travel experience.

Bright, sunny days reflected against a covering of fresh white snow gives the region its famous Norman Rockwell feel.  New England’s cities pulse with cultural activities. But the real stuff of winter is snow. From one end to another, New England provides locals and visitors with plenty of ways to get out and play.

Alpine ski areas range from full service mountain resorts and ski towns in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, to smaller-family oriented ski areas in every state. Those wishing to try downhill skiing or snowboarding may find the smaller areas more economical. The medium-sized to larger areas offer great lodging packages, more and longer runs, and a wide variety of off slope services from spas to sleigh rides. Apres-ski nightlife in the ski towns is exciting and vivid.

Cross country skiing and snowshoeing are the best ways to enjoy winter in New England up close. Either activity is easy to learn. There are Nordic ski areas at major resorts as well as specific cross country ski and snowshoeing venues in both mountainous and less hilly regions. Equipment rentals and instruction are available. Many parks and reserves also maintain trails for skiing and snowshoeing.

Not many people realize just how beautiful—and beneficial—cross country skiing can be. Unlike down hill skiing, you can really take in the beauty of the surroundings as you make your way across the land. It’s not uncommon to see small creatures—bunnies,  raccoons and such—as well as some winter birds.

Snowshoeing requires little skill, simply strap on the snowshoes and follow the trail. It’s as easy to learn as walking, but with a bit more effort. You’ll get the heart pumping for it’s a nice work-out, but you get to enjoy the amazing scenery in this winter wonderland. Many places offer both day and night walks for families. Evening walks are lead by a guide with a torch and the path is lit up with lights; it’s one of the most beautiful sights to be had. Of course enjoying a hot chocolate with whipped cream is the perfect way to top of the activity.

Snowmobiling has become a major winter pastime. Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine maintain thousands of miles of interconnected snowmobiling trails. Outfitters and guides provide advice, guided tours, and rentals so experienced winter hikers and skiers can explore deeply into the backcountry. Additional winter activities include snow tubing, ice skating, and dog sledding.

When was the last time you took a sleigh ride? There’s nothing that spells romance more than a horse-drawn carriage in the snow. This is something you can enjoy with your spouse or with the whole family. A warm blanket for the crisp night air and some falling snow complete the picture.

If it gets a bit too cold outside, why not enjoy one of the regions numerous spas? There are literally hundreds in the New England region ranging from small one-room treatment rooms in some B&Bs to large establishments that accommodate large groups. Some of the more well-known spas have large, heated swimming pools, Jacuzzis fireplaces, lounge areas and day beds. You can stay nice and warm while it’s cold outside.

Shopping is something that can be done year round and this is especially true in New England. From outlet shopping up in Kittery Maine, to the antiquing in Vermont and New Hampshire, a whole weekend can be spent devoted to this pastime.

Stargazing is not something to be done only in summer. In fact, on cold crisp nights, it’s the perfect time to see the constellations clearly. Go for a twilight walk, a moon-light stroll or simply peer out from your B&B to get a great view of the sky above. Nothing says romance like the stars above.

Of course simply spending the day in a cozy B&B curled up next to a roaring fire is the perfect way to spend a cold winter day in New England. And that’s what we call romance.
