Try: Taos (Exploretaos.com, 800/732-TAOS).
Why? Leave the crowds in the Grand Canyon and head to the soul of the Southwest. The majestic Sangre de Cristos Mountains are covered with evergreens and aspens and it’s just crying out to your inner hiker. Grab your honey and a day pack and head up a mountain for some of the most amazing views of the Rio Grande River Gorge. The views at sunrise and sunset are beyond beautiful. If hiking is not your thing, don’t fret. There’s fly fishing, rafting on the Rio Grande, hot air ballooning, biking and, yes, even llama trekking (it’s like horseback riding, but on a llama). Of course in winter, there’s amazing skiing. There’s no shortage of blood-pumping activities to test your inner Survivor.
Where to Stay: American Artists Gallery House B & B (Taosbedandbreakfast.com; 800/571-9816). Enjoy mountain views and star gazing from the hot tub on the patio, then move the romance inside in your Jacuzzi suite. Make sure to get up in time for fabulous breakfasts! Rates start at $75.00 per room per night.
Other places to try: Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, Chile—the hiking is intense but the views are worth it. Or, go to Queenstown, New Zealand, considered the adventure capital of the world. From sky diving to hang gliding to white-water rafting, you’re bound to find adventure in the place where bungee jumping originated.
