Exploring South Dakota’s Lakota Nation

Lakota History Tours


For travelers looking to experience the Lakota, there are two types of tours: Lakota History Tours and Self-Directed Tours.

Each nation has its own special events, lodgings and heritage information.  

Cheyenne River Lakota Nation
Pow Wows (or Wacipis) occur throughout the summer, the largest being the Labor Day Fair and Pow Wow.

The H.V. Johnston Lakota Culture Center displays historical artifacts including murals, old photographs, beadwork, and paintings. Call 605-964-2542 for more information.

The Timber Lake & Area Museum contains a unique collection of local artifacts. www.timberlakehistory.org

A tipi bed and breakfast provides adventure, comfort, and hospitality on the banks of the Cheyenne River. www.thebridgerproject.com

Rosebud Lakota Nation
Buechel Memorial Lakota Museum preserves Lakota tradition. www.sfmission.org/museum

The Rosebud Fair and Rodeo highlights the season of Pow Wows on Rosebud. Fourth weekend of August.

Rosebud Casino is a great destination for entertainment. www.rosebudcasino.com

Sinte Gleska University Cultural Heritage Center houses the history of the Sicangu people. http://www.sintegleska.edu/

Oglala Lakota Nation
The Oglala Nation Pow Wow and Rodeo is one of many Pow Wows during the summer. Celebrated the first full weekend of August.

The Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School is an impressive collection of Native fine art and tribal art. www.redcloudschool.org

The Oglala Lakota College History Center chronicles the history of the Oglala Lakota. www.olc.edu

Iron Road Gallery is South Dakota’s largest Indian owned gallery. 605-455-2555
