Texas: Explore the Great Outdoors

For outdoor enthusiasts, there is no shortage of fresh air activities to keep you active. You can start by exploring the state parks—with over 90 found in the Lone Star State, you can enjoy everything from hiking and biking to bird watching. In fact, Texas is one of the top birding destinations in the country, boasting over 625 species.

One of the best places to go birding is San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge. This expansive 24,000-acre park really does have birds of all feathers including herons, egrets, ibis, shorebirds, gulls and tems. In fact, you’d have to spend weeks here to see all 250 species on the refuge bird list. This picturesque reserve has beautiful walking trails for all levels of difficulty.

For larger animals, look no further than Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch in San Antonio. This African safari-style ranch is perfect for families with children who want to see a lot without too much walking. Mom or dad will drive their own car at their own pace through the preserve while kids will be on the look-out for a variety of animals including rhino, camel, giraffe, kangaroo and zebra. There are over 50 species from around the world—sure to keep the whole clan entertained.

If you want to play cowboy for a day—or week—you’ve come to the right place. Texas has over 70 guest and working ranches. Activities range from working on a dude ranch to enjoying some down-home cooking at a chuck wagon. Even the little ones can have fun—many ranches have special kid’s programs targeting the wee cowboys and girls.

Want to throw in a little education to your vacation? Well, Texas has an expansive collection of historic sites. Fort Davis, which was established over 150 years ago, was the first military post created to guard the 600 mile stretch of wilderness that runs from San Antonio to El Paso. The National Park Service now operates Fort Davis and visitors can journey back in time to experience a 19th century re-creation of a military parade. Everything from the sound of the mounted troops approaching, to the roar of the bugle and band is sure to impress travelers of all ages.

Take some time to stop and smell the flowers at Tyler Municipal Rose Garden, the nation’s largest rose showcase. The wonderful-scented gardens are at their peak May through November, so be sure to plan a trip then to enjoy the 38,000 rose bushes representing 500 different types of this magnificent flower.

From wildlife to ranch life to blossoming plant life, you’ll find plenty of family fun in Texas.
