Texas Music

Live Music Capital of the World

Ever wonder why Austin is known as the “Live Music Capital of the World”? The slogan became official on August 29, 1991, supported by the fact that Austin had more live music venues per capita than Nashville, New York City, Los Angeles and pretty much anywhere else in the nation. Today, the city hosts nearly 200 venues and is home to thousands of musicians. Which means you can catch a show any day of the week, at almost any time, if the mood and the tune strike.

One of the biggest draws to the city is South by Southwest. It started as a small music festival more than two decades ago. Today, SXSW hosts the best in music, featuring 1,800 bands on 80 stages from around the globe. And it all happens in the heart of downtown Austin.

Austin City Limits (ACL) is as integral to Austin's live music scene as the musicians that call this city home. Held every September, the ACL Music Festival welcomes more than 100 bands from around the world and brings thousands of visitors to Austin's Zilker Park.  In addition to the festival, the original ACL TV show is a PBS series that has brought both well-known and up-and-coming artists to its stage for more than three decades. The show is currently filmed on the University of Texas at Austin campus.
