South Texas
San Antonio is famous for its Tejano music, which is unique to South Texas and northern Mexico. In fact, each year this city plays host to the Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival where visitors can enjoy concerts, dances and workshops. This beloved music festival is held at San Antonio’s Guadalupe Theatre and Rosedale Park.
Conjunto, a highly stylized expression of American music, was born from a blend of rhythms from German settlers (polkas, waltzes and schottisches) mixed with indigenous Mexican musical forms. Also added to this lively ensemble is the Spanish guitar, or bajo sexto (a 12-string bass guitar). This unique sound is an essential part of any San Antonio vacation and makes for a memorable visit.
Also, from May through August, be sure to check out the Fiesta Noche Del Rio.
A San Antonio tradition, this performance features songs and dances of Mexico, Spain, Argentina and Texas and occurs Friday and Saturday evenings at the River Walk’s historic Arneson River Theatre.
