Texas: Shopping, Music and Fun

From outlet bargains to high-end stores, from nightclubs to family entertainment, Texas has it all. Shopping, music and family fun can be found throughout the state.

Shopaholics will find that they can do some serious damage. Whether you’re looking for one-of-a-kind luxury goods or bargain-basement prices at the outlets, you could spend your whole vacation filling your shopping bags.

If luxury is your style, a must is a visit to Houston’s Galleria where the well-dressed peruse jewelry, shoes and the latest designer styles.

For those searching for a deal, head to the Prime Outlets in San Marcos, which is the third largest outlet shopping destination in the world. Everything from luggage, to appliances and house wares, to the latest clothing fashions can be found here.

Of course those in the know will head straight to the Knox-Henderson Entertainment District, one of Dallas’ oldest shopping areas located just minutes away from downtown. This area has it all—antique shops, beautiful galleries, hip furniture stores and boutique apparel. What’s especially unique is that many of the original 1920s storefronts remain, giving it a wonderful historic feel. After spending the day shopping, stay for the evening and enjoy the delicious cuisine served at the area’s eclectic restaurants.

If you want to take a break from shopping, head to Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, which has won the Golden Ticket award for “Best Theme Park in the Country” for ten consecutive years. And what’s not to love? The kids will enjoy the Looney Tunes gang while adults will appreciate the talented performers and live concerts. This expansive park is actually set in a limestone quarry and showcases the best of Texas fun through heart-pounding rides and live entertainment. With over 50 attractions, the whole family will find something they enjoy. Highlights include the thrilling Goliath rollercoaster which involves an 80-foot drop. New to the park is Wiggles World. Geared toward younger kids, this area has rides, yummy snacks and an outdoor theater all revolving around the Wiggles show theme.

Music lovers know that some of the country’s top talent can be found in Texas in part because of its diversity. You literally can find every musical style including western, rock, Tejano, blues, jazz and gospel. Live music can be found throughout the state in big cities like Austin, Dallas and Houston, but also in towns such as Gruene and Luckenbach. With so many choices, you can’t go wrong. There are also hundreds of music-themed festivals and events happening throughout the state at any given time.

If you want to take in some culture, be sure to head to the Grace Museum in Abilene, where you’ll find three museums under one roof. There’s the art museum which has five gallery spaces and highlights an extensive array of changing exhibits, from modern to classic. The history museum showcases restored period rooms dating back to 1910. You can also view historical documents, artifacts and photographs. The state-of-the-art children’s museum is perfect for kids of all ages. There’s the oversized interactive clock full of levers and pulleys; the health zone where kids can learn about their bodies; and for the small tykes there’s the toddler exploration area representing the West Texas landscape with a Texas pecan tree where kids can climb and play.
