Cool happenings: This charming coastal community is a nature lover’s paradise, even in winter. Don't miss the award-winning exhibits at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the breathtaking 17-mile drive along Highway 1 ($8.50 per car)—watch for otters and seals, as well as migrating gray whales, monarch butterflies and bald eagles. In town check out waterfront shopping at Cannery Row, the Farmer’s Market at Old Monterey Place on Tuesdays and the Olympic size pool at the Sports Center (adults, $6.50; ages 6-17, $4).
