The call of the wild cannot be ignored. It speaks, or maybe howls, to our innermost coyote-colored memory. Some of us conjure up visions of tents by a lake, cozy campfires and toasted marshmallows on sticks. Great fishing dreams include a mammoth salmon tugging at the end of the line. Who doesn't want to climb Half Dome at Yosemite, visit bear country or thrash the rapids on the Colorado River?
Somewhere, deep inside each of us there is an Indiana Jones, looking for the adrenaline rush. The best thing about the outdoor adventures available today is that they include fresh air and a choice on the level of exertion. Watch out the Discovery Channel. Study the options. Consider a cabin stay near national parks, national botanical gardens or natural hot springs. Check the bargains available for mountain bike or trail expeditions at ski resorts in the summer months. To be totally out of touch and off the grid, take a sea plane into a wilderness lake resort where you can catch your own dinner.
Remember, if it is a walk in the park or spelunking a cavern -- no matter where you are, there you are.
